Anemurion, Aphrodisias of Kilikhia, Korykion Antron, Mamure Castle, and Kanlidivane Take Two

This has been a busy few days of sight seeing.  Adam an I have spent the last two days hiking non-stop around ruins and driving hither and thither to see them.  Here are some of the high lights.

The first stop on the road.  Elaiussa-Sebaste is a road side pull-off.

Elaiussa-Sebaste also has some mosaics that are revealed.

Stop two-- Mamure Castle.  Who knew that there were big romantic castles in Turkey?

The view from our hotel.  Not bad for 30 bucks a night.

Adam in one of the buildings in Anemurion.

The Meeting Hall at Anemurion seats 900 people, and this is the small one.

Exposed mosaic at Anemurion with the coast in the background.

Roman aqueduct at Anemurion.  I was standing in it!

Tomb with mosaic faces on the ceiling at Anemurion.  The color is a bit faded, sorry.

Terraced fields of strawberries outside of Anamur.

Aphrodisias of Kilikhia view of the Med.

Adam uncovering some of the mosaic.  They were covered with pebbles and sand for protection.

A bit of the mosaic floor.

More bits of mosaic floor.  I like the birds.

Some of the stairs to Korykion Antron (The pit of heaven and hell).  Can you see Adam?  He is standing in the pit of heaven part and I'm in the cavern of hell part.

From in the gorge of hell looking back at the church.  The cave goes another 100 meters down.  In all there are 450 steps to the bottom where you can hear a river which was thought to be the River Styx which served as a gate to the underworld.

Cave of Wish Hanging (Asthma Cave).  Near Heaven and Hell, and this cave complex took about 45 minutes to walk through.  The cave was huge and had many impressive mineral formations.

At Kanlidivane where Adam made a friend.

  1. The mosaics are beautiful! And I must say that I need to add seeing the Med Sea in person on my bucket list. The blue water looks amazing.
